Overview
Sepsis continues to be one of the biggest risks to patient safety in hospitals, skilled nursing and other medical facilities. As new studies continue to highlight the importance of proper sepsis care, it’s critical that clinicians have access to the most up-to-date information. This activity will provide clinicians with an analysis of the Surviving Sepsis Guidelines 2021 revisions and the science behind these evidence-based recommendations. Speakers will also address the current CMS guidelines and how they are applied in sepsis care. Session will explore sepsis in different populations, addressing the unique diagnostic and management challenges. Additional sessions will include why equity matters in sepsis care, the challenges in the evaluation and management of the undifferentiated febrile patient in the ED, the role of peripheral pressors in sepsis management, and a panel of nurse leaders addressing the nurse’s role in early detection and management of sepsis. Additional session will include a Sepsis Survivor and discussion on quality of life post acute care discharge.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Use current evidence based strategies for decision making and care planning to reduce readmissions and improve functional status and quality of life for patients with sepsis.
  2. Apply recommendations from the Surviving Sepsis Campaign 2021 revisions to align clinical decision and management of sepsis for optimal patient outcomes.
  3. Debate controversial perspectives on SEP-1 based on recent publications and data.
  4. Discuss factors that that impact a prompt and accurate diagnosis in the Emergency Department.
  5. Discuss variabilities in presentation, management, and outcomes in the obstetric, oncologic, and post-operative patients with sepsis.
  6. Assess the impact of poverty, multimorbidity, and healthcare access and quality on an individual’s risk for developing or dying from sepsis.
  7. Differentiate the complaint of fever in the Emergency Department.
  8. Evaluate practice guidelines and indications for use of peripheral vasopressors in sepsis management.
