Overview

This educational activity provides a comprehensive introduction to the rapidly evolving field of cardio-oncology, drawing on the expertise and resources of Jefferson Health’s Enterprise Cardio-Oncology Program and the Bruce and Robbi Toll Heart & Vascular Institute.

Participants will learn evidence-based strategies for evaluating and managing cardiovascular health in patients undergoing cancer treatment, as well as best practices for supporting long-term survivorship. Through presentations from leading local experts, the course explores the full spectrum of cardiovascular complications associated with cancer therapies and equips clinicians with practical tools to identify high-risk patients, interpret diagnostic data, and implement effective monitoring and prevention strategies.

Louis R. Dinon, MD Memorial Lecture in Clinical Cardiology Keynote
Susan Dent, MD, FRCPC, FICOS

Dr. Susan Dent completed her medical training at McMaster University and the University of Ottawa, followed by a clinical trials research fellowship with the Canadian Cancer Trials Group. She began her career as a staff medical oncologist in Thunder Bay before returning to Ottawa in 2001 to focus on breast cancer. There, she helped establish Canada’s first multidisciplinary cardio-oncology clinic in 2008 and later founded the Canadian Cardiac Oncology Network to advance cancer care without compromising cardiovascular health.

Her career then expanded to academic leadership roles at Duke University, where she served as Professor of Medicine and held key positions in breast cancer research and cardio-oncology. In September 2024, she joined the Wilmot Cancer Institute at the University of Rochester as Director of the Cardio-Oncology Program and Director of the Judy DiMarzo Cancer Institute Survivorship Program, continuing her work at the intersection of cancer treatment and heart health. Dr. Dent  is also the Immediate Past President International Cardio-Oncology Society.

Successful Completion
To successfully complete this activity, the required evaluation must be completed no later than Friday, May 29, 2026. Thereafter, the evaluation will no longer be available and credits will not be issued. No refunds will be offered for failure to complete the required evaluation by the stated deadline.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, healthcare team members will be able to:

  1. Define the spectrum of cardiovascular complications from cancer treatments.
  2. Recognize mechanisms of cardiotoxicity across different therapeutic classes.
  3. Identify high-risk patients before initiating cancer therapy.
  4. Apply cardiovascular risk assessment tools in cancer populations.
  5. Implement evidence-based surveillance strategies.
  6. Interpret cardiac imaging and biomarkers in the oncology setting.
  7. Recognize and manage acute cardiovascular conditions and complications.
  8. Balance cancer treatment continuation with cardiovascular safety.
  9. Outline cancer therapies’ potential impact on the cardiovascular system.
  10. Optimize cardiovascular risk factors to prevent cancer treatment interruption.
  11. Define cardiovascular risk in cancer survivorship.
