Overview

The 14th Annual Lung Cancer Symposium offers physicians, nurses, physician assistants, respiratory care specialists and public health professionals a comprehensive lung cancer update, and provide an interdisciplinary perspective of the disease, care and treatment management plans.

Keynote: Robert Timmerman MD, FASTRO, FACR

Dr. Robert Timmerman is Professor and Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology, as well as Professor of Neurosurgery, and is the holder of the Effie Marie Cain Distinguished Chair in Cancer Therapy Research at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

One of Dr. Timmerman’s greatest successes was the development of a trial that demonstrated inoperable lung cancer patients treated with SAbR could have considerably higher tumor control than with conventional radiation while still mostly avoiding toxicity. This provided hope to a whole new class of patients – the elderly, those with multiple health conditions, and others – who previously faced poor odds of beating their cancer. His treatment method has now become the new standard of care for this class of patients.

Dr. Timmerman currently directs training courses in stereotactic radiotherapy both at UT Southwestern and nationally for members of the national Radiation Therapy Oncology Group. He is a highly sought-after guest speaker and has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and textbooks.

With his patients, he continues to focus on diseases of the central nervous system, including cancer of the brain and spine, as well as lung cancer. He also specializes in seeing children and young adults who are still growing – those for whom extremely precise treatment is likely to result in better long-term quality of life.

Keynote: Daniel H. Sterman, MD, FCCP, ATSF, DAABIP

Dr. Daniel Sterman specializes in interventional pulmonology, a field that combines pulmonary medicine and thoracic surgery to perform minimally invasive procedures for diagnosing and treating cancers of the chest. Clinical expertise includes lung cancer, malignant pleural mesothelioma, pleural effusion, and disorders of the large airways such as the trachea and bronchi. He also performs staging procedures to assess disease progression.

For more than 18 years, Dr. Sterman has led research in gene therapy and immunotherapy to control chest tumors and improve outcomes for patients with lung cancer and mesothelioma, advancing care through clinical trials and innovative therapies.

Keynote: Helena A. Yu, MD

Dr. Helena Yu is a board-certified medical oncologist specializing in the care of patients with lung cancer. As a thoracic medical oncologist, Dr. Yu focuses on cancers of the chest, including lung, tracheal (windpipe), and thymic (thymus) cancers.

In addition to her clinical expertise, Dr. Yu is an early drug development specialist—a physician-scientist dedicated to testing new therapies to improve cancer treatment. She has advanced training in designing and conducting clinical trials, which are research studies that evaluate innovative approaches to care.

Successful Completion
To successfully complete this activity, the required evaluation must be completed no later than Thursday, April 2, 2026. Thereafter, the evaluation will no longer be available and credits will not be issued. No refunds will be offered for failure to complete the required evaluation by the stated deadline.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, healthcare team members will be able to:

  1. Discuss new modalities of surgery which can lead to long-term cures and optimal results for patients with lung cancer.
  2. Examine the utilization of a multidisciplinary team in the treatment of lung cancer.
  3. Assess the evolving radiotherapy techniques in treatment of lung cancer.
  4. Review the newest targeted molecular therapies and immunotherapies for lung cancer.
  5. Explain state of the art of lung cancer prevention.
  6. Evaluate the most appropriate diagnostic approach for lung nodules, lung masses, and metastatic lesions.
  7. Recognize how treatment techniques vary based on lung cancer disease stage.
  8. Assess the use of SBRT in early-stage lung cancer treatment.
  9. Identify specific strategies to implement on lung cancer disease management as part of a continuing improvement process for clinical practices.
  10. Employ lung cancer screening best practices for collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams to improve patient care.
  11. Assess respiratory care treatment strategies for lung cancer patients.
  12. Employ the latest community outreach strategies to reduce lung cancer disparities around the region.
  13. Explain the role of sub-lobar versus lobar resection in treating lung cancer with surgical intervention.
  14. Identify patients that are ideal candidates for minimally invasive, robotic surgery as a treatment for early-stage lung cancer.
  15. Examine the role of education in pulmonary rehabilitation with lung cancer patients.
  16. Practice multi-disciplinary collaboration with thoracic surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and interventional pulmonology through a mock tumor board.
  17. Apply relationship-building values and the principles of collaboration in caring for lung cancer patients.
  18. Examine the role of artificial intelligence across the lung cancer care continuum.
  19. Assess tobacco cessation strategies for patients across the lung cancer care continuum.
  20. Compare evolving immunotherapy modalities for genetic mutations in lung cancer treatment.
