Overview

The 2nd Annual Equity in Medical Education Summit, a pivotal event dedicated to transforming the medical education landscape, is set to take place on April 2, 2024, at the National Constitution Center. Organized by the Consortium of DEI in Health Educators (CDHE), this annual summit transcends the realm of mere dialogue. It serves as a powerful call to action, urging collective efforts to create lasting change.

The summit's core mission is to ignite a systemic change in response to the critical need for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within medical education. With a particular focus on underrepresented students, the event aims to address challenges in their recruitment, retention, and preparation for successful medical careers.

Following the morning keynote, attendees will participate in concurrent learning sessions designed to tackle specific challenges and equip them with actionable strategies. These interactive forums will explore diverse topics like navigating admissions hurdles, implementing holistic admissions practices, fostering "structural competence," and creating equitable pathways in graduate medical education. Each session, led by distinguished experts and thought leaders, will foster in-depth discussions on overcoming systemic barriers, revamping institutional practices for a more equitable environment, and sharing successful models for recruiting and retaining URM students.

The summit emphasizes the critical role of holistic review in admissions, fostering structural competence among educators, and implementing innovative strategies to empower URM students on their journeys. The afternoon features a second keynote by Bill McDade, focusing on valuable lessons learned from decades of diversity and inclusion efforts in health education.

The day concludes with a comprehensive roundtable discussion featuring seasoned healthcare educators exploring actionable strategies for supporting URM students throughout their academic journey. This session will highlight the significance of community, mentorship, and inclusive learning environments.

By fostering collaboration and drawing upon diverse perspectives, the summit aims to pave the way for the next generation of medical leaders – individuals equipped with the knowledge, skills, and cultural sensitivity to address persistent health disparities and provide culturally responsive care for all. This summit presents a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about creating a more just and equitable healthcare future. Join us and be part of the solution!
