Overview
Mental health affections have been on the rise as a sequel of the COVID -19 pandemic. Thomas Jefferson University Hospital campuses and network sites provide services to a considerable number of patients that experienced emotional and behavioral disturbances during the hospitalization course. To continue providing a higher level of care and avoid emotional and behavioral disturbances interfering with Med/Surg treatment, a consistent and coherent approach for the management of those comorbidities would be beneficial. Continuing the efforts to implement and sustain an interdisciplinary approach model will help the health care workers to learn from each other optimizing patient care. Due to the liaison role of the Consultation and Liaison (CL) Psychiatry service it would be worth promoting the education of CL psychiatry across medical specialties and hospital networks. We developed a regularly scheduled series to provide education and fill the knowledge gap on the management of medical and psychiatry comorbidities during the patients’ hospitalization course. The series will teach the health care providers about the identification of psychiatric comorbidities and understand the role of consultation and liaison psychiatry in identifying and addressing psychiatric comorbidities that potentially interfere with medical and surgical treatment. Providers should be cognizant of the specific mental health issues faced by the community served and how they should be managed, including knowing how to treat patients with substance abuse disorders as well as behavioral disturbances in the older population, delirium, etc. In addition, they will learn how to transfer a patient to a psychiatric unit, how to process an involuntary psychiatric commitment (302), and how to assess capacity. The CL Psychiatry series will promote the value of communication and interdisciplinary approach, understanding of psychiatry comorbidities in the medically ill and treatment options, and patient-centered treatment.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. To discuss the risk/predisposing factors and treatment approaches for delirium.
  2. To define and distinguish between substance use, abuse, tolerance, and dependence.
  3. To identify core conflicts in the doctor-patient relationship and identify strategies for coping with emotionally difficult interactions.
  4. To learn the differences between normal aging processes and neurocognitive disorders and tools for distinguishing the two, such as MMSE, MoCA, ASL and IALDs.
  5. To understand the liaison function of the consult liaison psychiatrist and outline the scope of practice.
