Overview

This annual symposium features in-depth presentations on stroke epidemiology and prevention, innovations in acute stroke intervention, updated strategies in medical management of stroke, new surgical techniques, panel discussion of challenging cases, nursing care of the stroke patient.

Successful Completion
To successfully complete this activity, the required evaluation must be completed no later than Thursday, March 28, 2024. Thereafter, the evaluation will no longer be available and credits will not be issued. No refunds will be offered for failure to complete the required evaluation by the stated deadline.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, healthcare team members will be able to:

  1. Formulate an appropriate management plan for blood pressure control in both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.
  2. Analyze the benefits and risks of current and emerging endovascular techniques and agents for brain aneurysms.
  3. Describe the evolution of IV thrombolytic therapy in stroke.
  4. Utilize the latest guidelines in the management of acute ischemic stroke.
  5. Summarize the latest AHA/ASA guidelines for management of SAH.
  6. Evaluate current strategies for managing ICH.
  7. Review the latest reversal agent available for the factor Xa inhibitors, including its pharmacologic properties, and which patients might be appropriate for the medication.
  8. Employ current pharmacotherapy data on anticoagulation and antiplatelet therapy in both primary and secondary prevention of stroke.
  9. Discuss factors that should be considered regarding when to start antithrombotic agents in stroke patients.
  10. Explain the “heart-brain” relationship as it pertains to stroke.
  11. Describe challenges faced by SAH survivors.
  12. Critique the use of stenting in treating various arterial and venous intracranial conditions.
  13. Evaluate how Mobile Stroke Units are changing the delivery of stroke care.
  14. Explore the advantages of telestroke in acute stroke triage.
  15. Discuss the link between OSA and stroke as well as methods to diagnose and treat OSA.
  16. Analyze the latest developments in thrombectomy for acute ischemic stroke patients.
  17. Recommend lifestyle modifications to patients to reduce the risk of primary and secondary stroke by examining the epidemiology and risk factors for stroke.

Keynote Speaker

 Neurosurgeon Adel Malek, MD, PhD, heads the Cerebrovascular and Endovascular Division in the Department of Neurosurgery. Dr. Malek completed neurosurgical training at Brigham and Women’s/Children’s Hospital Boston and neurointerventional radiology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Malek’s clinical expertise includes the multi-modal and minimally invasive treatment of brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs). His research interest lies in the cellular biology and mechanotransduction involved in the development of brain aneurysms and AVMs.
