Overview

This free Summit at the National Constitution Center will feature expert-led discussions with actionable outcomes to build pathways for the next generation of diverse medical leaders. Starting at 9AM adjourning at 4PM, programming will include a plenary, breakout sessions, an all-day networking suite, and a volunteer project. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

This region’s first Equity in Medical Education Summit will be the inaugural in a planned annual 5-year series convened by the Independence Blue Cross Foundation Institute for Health Equity and the Delaware Valley Diversity, Equity, and inclusion Consortium (DelVal DEI Consortium).

The DelVal DEI Consortium includes educators, faculty, and administrative staff from Philadelphia area medical, graduate, and allied-health schools focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion, bringing our region's unparalleled medical education resources together to promote equity and improve the health of our communities.

This year’s Summit will consider the landscape of successful educational initiatives underway in the Delaware Valley to identify unmet needs as well as potential areas of collaboration. 

The partners at the IBC Foundation and DelVal DEI Consortium have built a dynamic agenda of presentations and facilitated conversations led by national experts in DEI medical education with experience building pathway programs, addressing barriers to admissions and assessment bias, building mentorship and behavioral health support models, improving learning climate, advancing service learning, and creating networks to ensure success in clerkship, residency, and beyond.

 

Successful Completion
To successfully complete this activity, the required evaluation must be completed no later than Friday, May 26, 2023. Thereafter, the evaluation will no longer be available and credits will not be issued. No refunds will be offered for failure to complete the required evaluation by the stated deadline.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Assess existing models aimed to build stronger medical school pathway programs to recruit students URiM (pre-health and post-baccalaureate).
  2. Appraise medical school admission criteria, priorities, and policies.
  3. Identify the barriers faced by students URiM in the medical school pathway and admissions.
  4. Devise the potential means to address barriers faced by students URiM in the medical school pathway and admissions.
  5. Evaluate how peer institutions are incorporating cultural humility & anti-racism into curricula.
  6. Analyze ways that peer institutions are integrating academics and activities to support students URiM.
  7. Apply learnings regarding existing supports and needs for medical students URiM to better address readiness for residency, fellowship, and practice.
  8. Organize new partnerships at peer institutions to support students URiM.
