Social Connection as an Opportunity for Intervention: Promoting Safety in Sexual Minority People of Color Experiencing Intersectional Minority Stress
9:00AM - 11:30AM
Sylvanna Vargas, PhD, MPH (Presenter)

Dr. Vargas’ research is focused on the amelioration of mental health diagnoses. The overarching goal of her work is to develop innovative and large-scale solutions that improve the landscape of mental health services for underserved youth experiencing depression and suicidality. Her translational research spans from basic science on the social determinants of mental health to the implementation of culturally and contextually responsive evidence-based interventions that mitigate inequities.

She conducts research on how intersectional discrimination can erode social connection and contribute to disparities in depression and suicide risk among sexual minority people of color. Her current work examines how interventions that enhance naturalistic social support and care linkage (e.g., Motivational Interviewing, SAFETY-A) can be adapted and implemented within non-specialty service sectors that reach youth with unmet mental health needs (e.g., schools, peer-delivered helplines.)
Lunch Break
11:30AM - 12:30PM
An Evidence-Based Approach to Suicide Risk Assessment
12:30PM - 1:30PM
Matthew B Wintersteen, PHD (Presenter)

Utilizing an evidence-based approach to suicide risk assessment is the foundation for identifying risk, triaging to the appropriate level of care, and informing our treatment approach and outcomes. This presentation will focus on strategies to improve efforts to collect meaningful and valid data, as well as provide a tool for suicide risk assessment that is theory-driven and evidence-based.

Objectives:

  • Describe strategies that can assist with the collection of valid data from those being assessed for suicide risk.
  • Assess individuals for suicide risk using an evidence-based approach.
  • Consider how individual responses to suicide risk assessment help shape the picture of risk.

Break
1:30PM - 1:45PM
Safety Planning with Youth and Families
1:45PM - 2:45PM
Lucas Zullo, PhD (Presenter)

An overview will be provided of the SAFETY-A intervention for safety planning with youth and families. SAFETY-A (previously referred to as the Family Intervention for Suicide Prevention/FISP) is an evidence-based therapeutic assessment for youth suicide prevention. It is designed to gather information on the current level of suicide risk as well as provide a brief therapeutic intervention to mitigate this risk and establish safety. SAFETY-A is a family-focused intervention, with components to be used with the youth alone, caregiver alone, and family together, culminating in the creation of a developmentally informed plan.

Objectives

  • List core components of a family-focused approach to youth suicide prevention.
  • Explain the importance of applying a trauma-informed lens to youth suicide prevention.
  • Describe how to develop an emotions thermometer and safety plan with a youth at risk for suicide.

Break
2:45PM - 3:00PM
Language, Bias, and Diagnostic Disparities in Suicide Prevention
3:00PM - 4:00PM
Daria Williams, PsyD (Presenter)

Objectives:
  • Describe how language and implicit bias contribute to diagnostic disparities in evidence-based psychological interventions, as demonstrated through key research findings.
  • Explain the impact of bias in diagnostic processes and treatment outcomes, using examples from empirical studies.
  • Identify strategies for recognizing and reducing diagnostic disparities in clinical practice, based on current best practices in the field.
