Overview

This symposium will introduce the latest developments in rheumatology presented by experts in the field. Managing disorders with common feature of inflammation in the bones, muscles, joints, and internal organs can be a complex issue and patient problems are diverse, necessitating a team approach with differing expertise and skills. Attendees will be able to participate in the interactive discussions throughout the day.

This activity has pre-conference modules that need to be completed prior to the start of the activity. With the exception of the keynote, each session has a pre-conference module for a total of eight 30-minute modules.

Successful Completion
To successfully complete this activity, the required evaluation must be completed no later than Friday, November 8, 2024. Thereafter, the evaluation will no longer be available and credits will not be issued. No refunds will be offered for failure to complete the required evaluation by the stated deadline.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, healthcare team members will be able to:

  1. Summarize the American College of Rheumatology gout treatment guideline.
  2. Utilize guiding principle of treat-to-target in case-based real-world gout patients.
  3. Differentiate unique signs and symptoms of several disorders.
  4. Describe the most common causes of abnormal inflammatory markers, ANA, RF, ANCA tests.
  5. Differentiate use of traditional, biologic, and targeted synthetic DMARD therapy.
  6. Describe side effects and basic surveillance needed for medications commonly prescribed by the rheumatologists.
  7. Review management of osteoporosis with attention to when to escalate therapy and when to consider bisphosphonate holiday.
  8. Describe off-label treatment and newer FDA-approved treatment of SLE.
  9. Review common causes of elevated creatine kinase (CK).

Cancellation Policy

Requests for refunds must be submitted in writing and received in the Office of CPD two weeks prior to the start date of the course. There will be no refunds after this period.*  Cancellations notified before the two week time frame will incur a 25% administration fee (with a minimum of $20).  Registrants who fail to attend the conference are responsible for the entire fee.  All refunds will be processed after the conference.  The University reserves the right to cancel or postpone this course due to unforeseen circumstances.  In the event of cancellation or postponement, the University will refund registration fees, but is not responsible for related costs or expenses to participants, including cancellation fees assessed by hotels, airlines or travel agencies.

Guest Lecturer: Tuhina Neogi, MD, PhD

Dr. Neogi is a rheumatologist and epidemiologist whose research has focused primarily on risk factors for knee osteoarthritis and gout, pain mechanisms in knee osteoarthritis, as well as methodologic issues of relevance for rheumatic diseases. She has had continuous peer-reviewed foundation and NIH funding since 2003, and have over 300 peer-reviewed publications to date.

Dr. Neogi is also engaged in developing new classification criteria for a number of rheumatic diseases. In addition to research, clinical work, and teaching, one of her key roles is to mentor trainees and junior faculty in musculoskeletal disease-related research.
