Overview

The 10th Annual Philadelphia Spine Summit has been developed through a unique collaboration between the Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Neurological Surgery, the Rothman Institute and the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, Departments of Orthopaedic Spine Surgery and Neurological Surgery.

The course has been designed for spine surgeons and advanced practice providers seeking active discussions concerning the management of spinal disorders and who are interested in debating technological advancements, controversial spine topics and health policy issues.

Successful Completion

To successfully complete this activity, the required evaluation must be completed no later than Thursday, May 30, 2024. Thereafter, the evaluation will no longer be available and credits will not be issued. No refunds will be offered for failure to complete the required evaluation by the stated deadline.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, healthcare team members will be able to:

  1. Analyze new technologies in spine care to determine which patients would benefit from their applications.
  2. Examine the advantages of less invasive surgical techniques in order to identify patients who would benefit from these options to accelerate postoperative recovery.
  3. Explain media formats available for spine surgery education.
  4. Outline indications for endoscopic spine surgery and outpatient spine surgery.
  5. Determine the challenges in cervical spine surgery.
  6. Recommend the goal of deformity surgery in achieving a balanced spinal alignment, preventing further deformity and alleviating neurological symptoms.
  7. Summarize the impact of current health care policy changes on the delivery of spine care.
  8. Explain team dynamics and the need for interdisciplinary communication in comprehensive patient care.
  9. Assess individual surgical practices in light of emerging spine technologies and evidence based practice guidelines, with specific strategies to enhance their current practices.

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by Thomas Jefferson University and University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. Thomas Jefferson University is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

Physicians: This educational activity is designated for a maximum of 5.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM . Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Cancellation Policy

Requests for refunds must be submitted in writing and received in the Office of CPD two weeks prior to the start date of the course. There will be no refunds after this period.*  Cancellations notified before the two week time frame will incur a 25% administration fee (with a minimum of $20).  Registrants who fail to attend the conference are responsible for the entire fee.  All refunds will be processed after the conference.  The University reserves the right to cancel or postpone this course due to unforeseen circumstances.  In the event of cancellation or postponement, the University will refund registration fees, but is not responsible for related costs or expenses to participants, including cancellation fees assessed by hotels, airlines or travel agencies.

Keynote: David Skaggs, MD

Dr. David Skaggs is the Co-Director Spine Institute, Executive Vice-Chair of Orthopaedics, Director Pediatric Orthopaedics, and Professor of Orthopaedics, Pediatrics and Neurosurgery at Cedar Sinai. He is renowned for his expertise in the treatment of children with spinal deformity and trauma.

He is the Founding President of the Pediatric Spine Foundation and Study Group which has is the largest spine database in the world.

Dr. Skaggs has published over 250 peer-reviewed papers and delivered over 750 national and international lectures. He has designed 5 lines of spinal implants and developed numerous surgical techniques adopted world-wide. He has trained over 30 pediatric Orthopaedic fellows, and hundreds of residents and medical students. He greatly enjoys mentoring, teambuilding and engaging in leadership topics.

Dr. Skaggs serves as the Co-Editor in Chief of Orthobullets, the top Orthopaedic educational internet presence with over one hundred million-page views annually. He has edited multiple editions of the top selling textbook in the field of pediatric Orthopaedics, and well as editing 2 other texts which are purchased for trainees throughout the country's top institutions.

In the event that the symposium is canceled by the organizers, exhibit fees will be refunded in full, however Thomas Jefferson University is not responsible for other expenses incurred by the exhibitor.
 
In the event an exhibitor cancels participation, refunds will be made as follows:
 
  • Prior to the deadline of April 19, 2024 a refund will be given minus a 10% administration fee.
  • After April 19, 2024 no refund will be given.
  • Exhibitors who are absent from the conference will not receive a refund.
  • Exhibit cancellations must be made in writing.
