Overview

The 28th Annual Jefferson Anesthesia Conference in Big Sky, Montana offers a diverse, comprehensive program with world-reknowned experts. The conference includes didactic lectures, pro/con debates, problem-based learning discussions, and a regional anesthesia, point-of-care ultrasound and airway workshop.

Learners will receive updates and information on current trends in ambulatory anesthesia, airway management, regional anesthesia, acute pain medicine, and pediatric anesthesia.

The conference will provide learners with the tools to implement enhanced recovery protocols in ambulatory surgery, utilize regional anesthesia in the ICU to improve outcomes as well as the perioperative impact of tranexamic acid. In a live workshop, learners will have hands-on experience with ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve and fascial plane blocks, point-of-care ultrasound as well as airway management techniques.

Updates in postdural puncture headache, PONV, airway management, and perioperative management of opioid use disorder will also be covered.

Successful Completion

To successfully complete this activity, the required evaluation must be completed no later than Wednesday, February 28, 2024. Thereafter, the evaluation will no longer be available and credits will not be issued. No refunds will be offered for failure to complete the required evaluation by the stated deadline.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this conference, the learners will be able to:

  1. Utilize the most recent ASA airway guidelines in the approach to the difficult airway.
  2. Apply effective enhanced recovery protocols in preventing failed same-day discharge in ambulatory surgery.
  3. Implement comprehensive enhanced recovery protocols for ambulatory surgery.
  4. Compare the effect of the most common drugs of abuse including fentanyl, xylazine, and cannabis on perioperative anesthetic care.
  5. Develop an effective step-by-step approach to awake intubation.
  6. Compare the benefits and pitfalls of double-lumen tubes versus bronchial blockers.
  7. Recognize the most common adverse events that occur in the perioperative period secondary to modern drugs of abuse.
  8. Develop methods to ensure health equity amongst patients receiving regional anesthesia and acute pain management.
  9. Use inhalation anesthesia kinetic to clinical advantage during induction, maintenance, and emergence.
  10. Translate the most recent recommendations on postoperative nausea and vomiting prophylaxis.
  11. Explain the use of low flow anesthesia and control anesthetic depth.
  12. Explain the most common complications of one-lung ventilation and the appropriate management.
  13. Examine the literature for the benefits of regional anesthesia on respiratory function in patients with rib fracture.
  14. Measure the value of regional anesthesia on improving analgesic outcomes in pediatric patients.
  15. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of opioid vs opioid-free anesthesia.
  16. Describe the use methadone intraoperatively as a component of the anesthetic management.
  17. Discuss the increasing utilization of ambulatory surgery and the anesthetic implications.
  18. Examine the potential pitfalls of running an inpatient and outpatient ketamine service.
  19. Demonstrate the most effective approaches to prevent unrecognized esophageal intubation.
  20. Examine the literature for the advantages and disadvantages of programmed intermittent bolus compared to continuous infusions in continuous peripheral nerve blocks.
