Overview

This 4-hour medicinal cannabis education program will provide current and emerging information and education about the medical uses of marijuana for patient care, including the foundational endocannabinoid system, cannabinoid-focused therapies, certifying and dispensing, clinical and pharmacological assessment, and legal, legislative, and regulatory considerations. In addition, the course will also provide the necessary training required by the Pennsylvania DOH for physicians to recommend medicinal marijuana to patients and for physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners who seek to work in Pennsylvania dispensaries.

The overall educational goals of this activity is to disseminate information and education to health care professionals regarding the basic science underlying the pharmacologic and therapeutic options associated with medical cannabis in patient care, and provide information on legislative measures of federal and Pennsylvania state law on the use, recommendation for use, and dispensing of medical marijuana for medical conditions.

This program covers (4) major topic areas:

  • General Information about Medical Marijuana under Federal and State Law
  • Endocannabinoid System Scientific Research & Medical Marijuana
  • Recommendations for Medical Marijuana & Continuing Patient Care
  • Best Practices for Patient Registration and Physician Certification

This course is designed for healthcare professionals involved in the treatment of patients who may benefit from medicinal cannabinoids.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Explain general information on federal and state laws and Pennsylvania regulations related to recommending the use of medical marijuana.
  2. Outline the function of the endocannabinoid system.
  3. Describe the potential therapeutic benefit and appropriate indications for the medical use of marijuana and other cannabinoids including review of the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program.
  4. Identify primary therapeutic indications, safety concerns, physiological and psychological side effects and contraindications for medicinal cannabis and other cannabinoids.
  5. Contrast the relationship between opioids and medicinal marijuana in use and misuse or abuse.
  6. Explain best practices for recommending the form of medical marijuana and dosage based on the patient's medical condition including pain management and palliative care.
  7. Translate the risk and benefits of medical marijuana and other cannabinoids with patients, families and other health professionals.

Registration
The fee for all learner types is $200.

Accreditation


In support of improving patient care, Thomas Jefferson University, is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

 

Physicians: This educational activity is designated for a maximum of 4.00 AMA PRA Category 1 credits TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurses: This activity awards 4.00 nursing contact hours.

Pharmacists: This knowledge-based continuing education is designated for {CME Hours} credit of continuing education credit. JA4008236-0000-22-018-H03-P
Credits will be uploaded to CPE Monitor within 60 days following completion of the activity. This statement contains information provided to NABP from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) via CPE Monitor. ACPE policy states paper and/or electronic statements of credit may not longer be distributed directly to learners as proof of ACPE credit. The official record of credit may be located on the learner's e-profile in CPE Monitor.

Physician Assistants:

 

Thomas Jefferson University has been authorized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA) to award AAPA Category 1 CME credit for activities planned in accordance with AAPA CME Criteria. This activity is designated for 4.00 AAPA Category 1 CME credits. PAs should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation.

 

Other Healthcare Professionals: This educational activity is designated for 4.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM. Participants should claim only credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Cancellation Policy

Requests for refunds must be submitted in writing and received in the Office of CPD two weeks prior to the start date of the course. There will be no refunds after this period.*  Cancellations notified before the two week time frame will incur a 25% administration fee (with a minimum of $20).  Registrants who fail to attend the conference are responsible for the entire fee.  All refunds will be processed after the conference.  The University reserves the right to cancel or postpone this course due to unforeseen circumstances.  In the event of cancellation or postponement, the University will refund registration fees, but is not responsible for related costs or expenses to participants, including cancellation fees assessed by hotels, airlines or travel agencies.
