Overview

The 9th Annual Jefferson Sleep Medicine Symposium is specifically designed for primary care physicians and selected practicing specialists in a variety of fields, including sleep medicine, cardiology, neurology, occupational health, oral & maxillofacial surgery, otolaryngology, psychiatry, pulmonary/critical care medicine, as well as other health care providers such as dentists, medical assistants, nurses/nurse specialists, physician extenders, psychologists, respiratory therapists, and sleep medicine technologists.

Developed by experts whose disciplines span core specialties in sleep medicine, this symposium will explore novel, cutting-edge developments on a myriad of hot topics in sleep disorders. Learn from experts as they cover the latest updates on:

  • Improving outcomes in restless legs syndrome
  • Application of Artificial Intelligence in the Clinical Practice of Sleep Medicine
  • Evaluation and Management of Obesity-Hypoventilation

Successful Completion
To successfully complete this activity, the required evaluation must be completed no later than Thursday, June 6, 2024. Thereafter, the evaluation will no longer be available and credits will not be issued. No refunds will be offered for failure to complete the required evaluation by the stated deadline.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, healthcare team members will be able to:

  1. Explore challenges and strategies for improving outcomes for patients with restless legs syndrome.
  2. Explain the bidirectional relationship between depression and insomnia.
  3. Assess the role of novel pharmacological compounds including those acting on the histamine, melatonin, and orexin systems in the management of insomnia.
  4. Examine the role of artificial intelligence in the clinical practice of sleep medicine.
  5. Identify the spectrum of treatment modalities for sleep-related breathing disorders including obstructive sleep apnea syndrome(OSA) and obesity-hypoventilation.
  6. Design a systematic approach for the management of excessive sleepiness and other key symptoms of narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia.
  7. Identify risk factors for REM sleep behavior disorder.

Cancellation Policy

Requests for refunds must be submitted in writing and received in the Office of CPD two weeks prior to the start date of the course. There will be no refunds after this period.*  Cancellations notified before the two week time frame will incur a 25% administration fee (with a minimum of $20).  Registrants who fail to attend the conference are responsible for the entire fee.  All refunds will be processed after the conference.  The University reserves the right to cancel or postpone this course due to unforeseen circumstances.  In the event of cancellation or postponement, the University will refund registration fees, but is not responsible for related costs or expenses to participants, including cancellation fees assessed by hotels, airlines or travel agencies.

Guest Lecturer: Christopher J Earley, MBBCh, PhD

 Dr. Christopher Earley's research and clinical interests are devoted to Sleep Medicine with a special interest in Restless Legs Syndrome. His current research is focused on understanding the pathophysiology of Restless Legs Syndrome and further elucidating the value of various treatments in this syndrome.
Dr. Earley received his medical degree as well as a PhD in Pharmacology from the University College in Galway, Ireland. He completed a full residency in Internal Medicine at Baylor Medical College and then went to the University of Virginia in Charlottesville to complete his residency in Neurology. After then spending a year at the NIH as a fellow in the Neurobiology Unit, Dr. Earley joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins in 1991.

Guest Lecturer: Charles Joonghie Bae, MD

Charles Bae, MD is a Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine (Sleep Medicine). Dr. Bae completed his medical degree at Georgetown University School Of Medicine and a master's degree in Healthcare Innovation from the University Of Pennsylvania.

 

 

Guest Lecturer: Jodi Mindell, PhD

Dr. Jodi A. Mindell, Professor of Psychology and Director of Graduate Psychology at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, is a clinical psychologist specializing in pediatric sleep medicine. Dr. Mindell has written extensively on pediatric sleep disorders and presented over 250 papers at national and international conferences. Her research focuses on assessment and treatment of infant and toddler sleep disturbances, cross-cultural differences in sleep in young children, and the impact of sleep on development. She is the author of Sleeping Through the Night: How Infants, Toddlers, and Their Parents Can Get a Good Night's Sleep and co-author of A Clinical Guide to Pediatric Sleep: Diagnosis and Management of Sleep Problems. She is also chair of the Pediatric Sleep Council that provides publicly available information about infant and toddler sleep.

Guest Lecturer: Ruth Benca, MD, PhD, FAASM

Dr. Ruth Benca, is a Chair and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She is also a Professor of Translational Neuroscience. Dr. Benca completed her medical degree and residency in psychiatry at the University of Chicago.
