Overview

Early screening for peripheral artery disease (PAD) has been shown to reduce the probability of an amputation due by 90 percent but is greatly underutilized as only 12.5 percent of patients with PAD are identified by physicians and treated.

Primary care providers are often the first point of care for many underserved populations with PAD. As they are in the front line to help identify and reduce PAD a comprehensive history and physical examination (including a thorough vascular examination, followed by an ankle branchial index (ABI) screening can lead to early intervention.

This course includes the scope of the problem in high risk communities of color and step by step instruction on how to conduct an ankle branchial index test.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, healthcare team members will be able to:

  1. Explain the steps to conduct an ankle branchial index (ABI) test.
  2. Explain how the ABI test is useful in primary care settings to reduce health disparities in high risks communities of color.
  3. Review the differences between normal and abnormal values for ABI test.

Registration
This educational activity is free to all learners.
