Paul DiMuzio, MD, MBA

Dr. Paul DiMuzio was born and raised in Philadelphia, where he continues to live with his wife of 33 years.  Together they have three adult children who also live in the Philadelphia area.

 

After completing his BA at Johns Hopkins University in 1985, he received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1989.  He then trained at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in general surgery, followed by a vascular surgery fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco in 1996After his clinical training, he returned to Jefferson where he now serves as the William M. Measey Professor of Surgery, Director of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, and Co-Director of the Jefferson Vascular Center.  He completed an MBA at the University of Nebraska in 2017.

 

His clinical interests include treatment of carotid disease, complex aortic aneurysm, peripheral vascular disease and thoracic outlet syndrome.  He performs both open and minimally-invasive endovascular repairs, and was one of the first to introduce the total percutaneous treatment of aortic disease as well as TCAR (trans-carotid arterial revascularization) to the Philadelphia region.  His clinical expertise has earned him the title of Distinguished Fellow of the Society of Vascular Surgery and perennial naming as one of the regions “Top Doctors.”  He was elected to the American Surgical Association in 2016.

 

Dr. DiMuzio has an extensive research background including stem cell tissue engineering, specifically involving the development of a small-diameter vascular graft.  He has received funding from the NIH, AHA, ADA, and AVA.  He was named the 2003 Wylie Scholar in Academic Vascular Surgery from the Pacific Vascular Research Foundation. He is currently focused on clinical trials that involve endovascular AAA repair, carotid artery imaging, and prevention of vascular wound infection.

 

In the educational realm, Dr. DiMuzio started Jefferson’s ACGME-approved vascular surgery fellowship in 2008, which remains strong as a nationally-recognized training site for future vascular surgeons.

 

He is an active, senior leader within the American Board of Surgery.  In this role, Dr. DiMuzio has contributed to the development of questions used for the Vascular Surgery Qualifying Examination as well as a perennial participant in giving the Vascular Surgery Certifying Examination.

 

He has served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Vascular Surgery since 2011 and is currently an Assistant Editor for the Journals (four).  He is the seminal founder of their social medial efforts (2017) and founded their unique JVS Online Journal Club, which he continues to run on a monthly basis.

 

He and his wife are active, yearly contributors to the Make-A-Wish Foundation in the Philadelphia region, having raised approximately $100,000 via a yearly tennis/golf outing.  Dr. DiMuzio served on the MAW Board from 2014-2021.
